Engadget’s got a hot tip on what could very well be the next version of the Apple TV. According to an inside source at Apple, the new Apple TV could be described as an “iPhone without the screen,” featuring the same iPhone OS 4 and A4 processor, 16GB flash storage, with 1080p decoding in a small form factor of just video output and power cables. Thanks to all of that already developed tech (and no screen), it could cost as low as $99.

It will focus on streaming and cloud storage, including videos and music (it would tie in well with Apple’s acquisition of Lala). Time Machine external back up support will be included.

Of course, this would be a very interesting competitor to Google’s newly announced Google TV. News of the device won’t be coming as soon as WWDC, but should hit before Google TV arrives later this year.
