iPad Ripped Apart, Costs Just $260 To Make

iSuppli iPad iPad Ripped Apart, Costs Just $260 To Make

Oh iPad how I love you so.  No, I really love my iPad.  I bought a 32GB version.  Total retail cost with tax: $660.  So, yes, it pains me to see that the 32GB version cost Apple just $289 to manufacturer, at least according to iSuppli, the masters of tearing a product apart and assessing its innards.  Shockingly 40% of those costs have gone towards powering the iPad’s magnificent touchscreen, while the aluminum casing costs just $10.50.

It’s important to keep in mind that the retail cost, the amount we pay includes Apple’s overhead, such as insurance, advertising, electricity, employee wages and more.  So that begs the question: how much is Apple making on each unit?  Will we ever know?
