How do you one up the makers of the Withings WiFi Body Scale?  Simple, you introduce a comparable product but instead of WiFi it sends the scale’s recorded data to a website using a GSM signal, otherwise known as a cell phone connection.

So what’s the catch?  You really not buying the BodyTrace eScale.  In fact, you pay a monthly fee of $9.99 to use the service and $59.99 to start (the cost of the scale) provided that you don’t sign a one year contract (if you do, they’ll give you the scale for free).  They’re really trying to target health care professionals and perhaps even let them peddle the device, since it would enable doctors and nurses to remotely monitor one’s weight on the daily.

The good news is that if you get stuck with this thing, it ain’t half bad looking and there is a small display to convey you’re weight.  Unfortunately it doesn’t measure your BMI, though the website can make some conjectures about your lean to fat ratio based on the data you punch in.
