NVIDIA today announced 3DTV Play, an interesting software solution that allows compatible desktops and laptops to connect to 3-D HDTV’s for a full, immersive experience. The connection comes through the new HDMI 1.4 standard, which allows 3-D at full 1080p24 resolution, as well as 720p60 and 720p50. Panasonic, who partnered with NVIDIA to promote the software, launched their line of 3-D HDTVs this month.
Using the software, consumers can connect laptops or desktops with a compatible GeForce® GPU to their 3-D HDTV’s to watch 3-D Blu-Ray movies, using the NVIDIA GPU to provide smooth playback.
Nvidia currently offers a 3D solution for PCs with their 3D Vision video cards and glasses, but a standalone version of 3DTV Play will be available so that consumers can use the stereoscopic glasses that came with their 3-D HDTV.
The software will also allow users to play over 400 popular 2-D games in 3-D, such as World of Warcraft and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, without any additional patches.
