Yup, another day another infrared dongle for your iPhone. Say what?! Today, New Potato Technologies (ya, seriously) announced their very own infrared dongle and application that turns the iPhone or iPod Touch into an IR universal remote, called the FLPR. So how does one differentiate themselves the from the pack? They’re boasting a database of over 14,000 codes for your lights, TVs, receivers and more right out of the box, something PowerA definitely lacks and Redeye might come close to.
I’m not sold on the iPhone Universal Remote scheme. While they might work, the last thing I wanna do is fumble through my list of apps and burn my battery controlling my TV or cable box. It’s just not practical. But, if some how one could manipulate the system to work over WiFi to control the entire home (think cheaper, a lower key Crestron) then I think they might have something.
The FLPR is available now for $80, or you can wait until later this month when it will hit store shelves at a BestBuy near you.
NOTE: Much like PowerA’s remote, you’ll need to rotate the iPhone 180 degrees, holding the dock end up.
