Firefly: A Uniquely Smart Bike Light

The Firefly light rethinks the rear bike light and adds additional safety to the already popular illumination tool.

Instead of just flashing red, the Firefly uses infrared sensors to detect when there is an approaching vehicle and not only increases its intensity but distributes light onto the rider’s back.  Additionally, a set of LEDs light the ground around the bicyclist creating a sort of halo effect, which should enable drivers and other cyclist to more easily judge their distance and size.  Last but not least, it’s designer has also integrated a power port on the Firefly for powering devices or other lighting accessories.

Right now the Firefly is  a concept only and is part of the James Dyson Awards.  But I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw this thing go retail sometime later this year.
