Slim PS3 Dismantled, Hard Drive Appears To Be Easily Replaceable

dismantled-ps3

Well, we knew it was only a matter of days, in fact hours, before someone would tear apart Sony’s newest video game console, the Slim PS3.  Based on iFixit’s walk through it looks surprisingly easily to dismantle and best of all it appears as if only a few screws need to be removed to unhinge the 120GB hard drive.  In fact, the hard drive is just a standard issued Toshiba laptop drive (model #:MK1255GSX) so there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from swapping it out for a 320GB or 500GB.  Unless of course the machine’s firmware prevents this sort of thing, but I’m sure someone will find a work around when need be.

I wonder what the implications of tossing in a 7200rpm drive with a higher cache would be? Faster load times?

the difference in load time from 5400rpm and 7200rpm is not even noticable. Were talkin seconds. Disappointed to see the same model and size hard drive is not used though. i was going pop the 500gb drive i have now in my fat PS3 into my Slim when i got one. Looks like ill just have to buy another hard drive. although 120gb isnt too bad.

I suppose Sony’s energy savings would also be compromised by a faster hard drive…

Sony have stated that the Slim PS3 hard disk drive is “removable” – so no problems upgrading to a 500GB!
