RFID is slowing starting to trickle out into consumer products, but what little we’ve seen seems to have had very little application in our everyday lives. Freecom’s Hard Drive Secure, though, uses the tech in a very savvy manner that might have some grinning with joy.
Embedded into the drive is an RFID reader. When the included card is passed within its proximity the drive is unlocked and data can be written and read from the 2TB of storage. Which basically means that in the event that the drive is lost or stolen, its contents is still protected.
Feature wise it’s pre-formatted to fat32 and sports a USB 2.0 interface, which should make it compatible with most computers out of the box. The drives casing is crafted of aluminum and operates sans fan (aka silence).
But with any relatively new tech comes a price. Freecom’s Hard Drive Secure is $500 and only includes two cards, so you better not lose them.
