Public garbage cans are an absolute necessity for keeping our streets clean, but ironically they require a smog producing truck for them to be emptied. Enter the Big Belly, a solar powered trash compacting trash bin. The Big Bellys are about to be installed in 500 locations in Philadelphia and will save the city up to $12 million over the next 10 years. You see, the Big Bellys only need to be emptied up to 5 times per week as opposed to 19 time with regular trash bins since they compact their own trash. So not only will the city of Philly save money, but will cut their CO2 emissions.
