Maybe it's a matter of personal taste and fit, but the JVC HA-FX300's are my absolute favorite earbuds. I keep a pair at home and at work and use them for hours daily. I find the bass more strong and descriptive and the mid ranges and trebles clear and precise. I also love the design. I experience no cable rustling whether I'm walking around or running on the treadmill. In ear headphones are terribly dependent on fit and not every pair mates well with every ear. Consumer Reports did find these to be a very high performing set, as well.

I purchased the JVC buds a week ago and have let them burn in for about 6 days and they still sound incredibly shrill to me as well. Just listening to them for 30 minutes gives me a headache, yet I can use my Senheiser MX660 all day long with no detrimental effects.
This is too bad as I LOVE the metal body of the earbuds. They are going back to Fry's today. :(
