On March 17th, Apple will no longer acknowledge the existence of many older Macs. Talk about abandonment. As of this date, the following items will be recognized as either “vintage” or “obsolete” by Apple.
Vintage:
- Xserve RAID
- Xserve (Slot Load)
- Xserve (Cluster Node)
Obsolete:
- PowerBook G4
- Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio)
- Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver)
- Macintosh Server G4 (Digital Audio)
- Macintosh Server G4 (Quicksilver)
What this means is that Apple will no longer provide service parts or documentation for these products, and the items cannot be sent in as Mail-In Repairs to AppleCare Repair Centers. Boo! This applies in the: United States, Asia-Pacific, Canada, Europe, Japan, Latin America, and in Retail Apple Stores. However, legally speaking, the items on the vintage list can receive service parts for older Macs only purchased in California, due to the required statute. Everywhere else these products are done diddled. Goodbye old friends.
