Gadget Review: ZaggPhones
Headphones and Earbuds. Earbuds and Headphones. So many choices! Today I have the pleasure of reviewing the ZaggPhones. The first thing that I liked about the ZaggPhones was the sound. They produced a really wide stereo field, and I felt like I could hear so much more from recordings that I thought I had previously mastered. It was a great feeling to play some of my favorite recordings only to discover nuances I had never heard before. The mix was well balanced with treble and mid range frequencies not being too shrill or dull, and I felt the only thing I needed was a little more bass. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said that! I felt like Christopher Walken clamoring for more cowbell!
As far as construction is concerned, they feel way tougher than they look. Showcasing moderate visual flair, the ZaggPhones just kind of look like they might break easily. The plastic casing on the hinge that swivels the actual phones is exposed, and it must have been a cost cutting design decision because it isn’t winning the headphones any style points. However, when you touch and hold the ZaggPhones, they feel very quality and long lasting. When discussing comfort levels, they generally felt good for a few hours, but not when I was wearing my glasses. The padding around the ZaggPhones is a semi-soft foam that feels nice but could be softer for extended use purposes. There is another pad underneath the bar that rests above you head which helps those who don’t have a lot of hair.
Other features of note include:
- Standard 1/8th inch gold jack with 1/4 inch adapter
- Dry rubber cord wound to prevent tangles
- Nifty carrying case
- Great sound!
- Good cord length and weight
- Comfortable design
- Needs more bass!!
- Can get uncomfortable when wearing glasses
- Hard to see which is left & right phones, could use a contrasting color
Having never heard of ZAGG before CES 2009, I was impressed with the quality of the product, and I am happy to give the company the positive exposure they deserve. For it’s price range, the ZaggPhones will give other better known headphone manufacturers a run for their money. Check them out and rediscover your music!
