I love me some sniper action in COD4 (I’m still waiting on my copy of COD5). The reality, though, is that snipers are ultra deadly on the battlefield and for lack of better words they have proved a significant nuisance in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Starting some time next year, US soldiers will be able to detect a sniper’s location using the Soldier-Wearable Acoustic Targeting System (SWATS). It works by digesting the audio emitted from the sniper’s first shot, detects in a 360-degree radius and isn’t confused by ambient noise. The technology is probably top secret so I couldn’t tell you exactly how it functions, but it apparently just takes seconds for the sniper to be localized.
