Chrysler Plans EV-DO Car Integration: Uconnect
Remember car phones? You know, those corded things that sat in the car’s center console, or at the passenger’s feet and used a cord to a box to another box in the trunk with an ugly antenna on the roof? Looks like Chrysler is planning a 2008 version, only it’s EV-D0. For $500 and a few activation and installation fees, Chrysler car owners (i.e. Jeep, Dodge, etc) can have a Uconnect Web box installed in their vehicle that will provide always on Internet via EV-DO. The service will cost $29 a month and require vehicle owners/Internet freaks to have the instatllation completed as an after market mod. Download speeds are reported to be 400Kbps – 800Kbps.
Which brings me back to my original and somewhat convuluted point. Why not tether an EV-DO compatible phone to your laptop and not incur yet another monthly charge and more equipment that’s sure to be outdated in a few years?
