How AIM Works On The iPhone

I downloaded AIM from the Apple App store and was immediately disappointed with its functionality, but after some testing and playing around with it I’m a bit more satisfied. If you’re like me, you looked for some instructions, or some sort of a manual and came up short. Here’s what I’ve figure out:
- The AIM app will eventually ’sign off’ if you exit the program and lock the phone. This takes about 3 minutes or so.
- To stay logged on, simply lock your phone with the app still open. Message notification will sound and vibrate.
- If you log in, by opening the app, and then use other apps or features on the phone, you can continue to receive messages but you won’t be notified until you return to the AIM app. In fact, all the missed messages will come through at that time. What I didn’t figure out is if you’ll get logged off while still using the phone (checking mail, etc) past the aforementioned 3 minutes.
- You can apply a status message to both ‘available’ and ‘away’ settings. I used ‘iPhone: Available’ and ‘iPhone: Away’, so folks know I am on a handset.
- I didn’t upgrade to the 3G iPhone, but the service seems to put a limit on message throughput. In other words, I quickly sent 10 messages to my iPhone AIM app, and the iChat on my computer wouldn’t let me until the iPhone’s EDGE (aka slow ass Internet) caught up.
- Login and password can be found under the ‘Settings’
If anyone else has something to add please email me or drop a comment.

I don’t like it how it logs you off from aim after a few minutes. Is there no way to keep it logged in even while you are in other apps? I know on cell phones, you can set as mobile aim. Is that option not available on the iphone?
