A Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student has created a new type of LED that better harnesses the emitted light and could possibly improve current LCD screens. Called Polarized LEDs, Martin Shubert discovered that standard LEDs already produced this type of light it was just a question of controlling the light and insuring that it reached its destination. According to Shubert, Polarized LEDs will improve LCDs such that images on the display are more colorful, vibrant and lifelike with no motion artifacts. I should probably mention that Martin Shubert is the son of renowned lighting research expert and senior chair of the Rensselaer Future Chips Constellation, E. Fred Schubert. Martin won $30k from the Lemelson-Rensselaer Student Prize for his discovery.
