To many, attending college means the loss of some privacy – share a room, bathrooms, etc. For the Freshmen at New Jersey’s Montclair State University privacy, or lack there of, has a whole new meaning. The University is offering special cell phones that in exchange for the user’s location, will communicate cafeteria specials, display bus location, and also enable its user the ability to activate an emergency beacon (known as “Gaurdian” service) if they feel in danger. Presumably, students will be able to communicate with one and other and the college will charge a $186 fee for the service. Students can purportedly turn the “homing beacon” feature on and off, putting to rest any privacy concerns. Expect similar services coming to a college near you.
