How about a laptop that’s battery runs for 2 days with no recharging? Yeah, we’d all love one and I’d like a cell phone with all the imaginable bells and whistles and a 1 month battery life. Well, the laptop battery life may not be to far off. Ultracell demonstrated its XX25 micro fuel cell system at the Intel Developer Forum this week. The juice is derived from a “reformed methanol fuel cell,â€? and is currently in a prototype stage for military use and testing – expect a commercial version by the end of 2006. The XX25 has been designed to military spec for extreme hot and cold use, and sudden impact – leaves us wondering what happens if this thing gets shot. Testing of the XX25 is set for the 2nd quarter of 2006, while the commercial version – the UC25 - is due for testing come the 2nd half of 2006.

Little thought has gone into how to make these battery dependent devices more efficient and ultimately suck down less energy. After all, a collaboration of both efforts would produce twice the results. Fortunately, a team of researchers from the University of Rochester, headed by Professor Hui Wu, say the developed a circuit for use in cell phones and wireless devices that use far less energy then today’s. You’re probably asking yourself how this relates to battery life? Well, current wireless devices utilize a clock generated by a circuit called “phase-lock loop� which enables devices to communicate on exactly the right frequency. Although this “circuit� is just one many culprits that sucks down vital battery juice – the transmitter and microprocessor eat more power – it is constantly on. The team’s new circuit, “Divide by Odd Number ILFD (injection locked frequency divider)� uses far less energy to transmit and reduces energy consumption to a radical 10%. [...]
