RFID Shopping Assist robots went live in Japan this past week. Looking very much like an automated floor cleaner, the RFID Shopping robot guides its shopper from store to store via RFID tags embedded in the floor, or at the product level. The robot provides product and store information via a touch screen LCD, can store purchased products in a lock box, and only works with registered shoppers who carry an RFID identifying tag. The Robot Shoppers can also be controlled remotely allowing home shopping via a teleconferencing camera (allows for store clerk interaction) mounted on the robot.
