Blu-Ray Movie Release Date Announced

Sony has set a target release date of May 23rd for the first wave of Blu-Ray hi-def discs to appear retail. This release date coincides with the first available Blu-Ray player by Samsung. First wave titles include: 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, A Knight’s Tale, The Last Waltz, Resident Evil Apocalypse and XXX. And will be followed on June 13th by: Kung Fu Hustle, Legends of the Fall, Robocop, Stealth, Species, SWAT and Terminator.

  1. [...] So if the Blu Ray/HD DVD debacle isn’t frustrating enough enter VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disc). Right now you are probably scratching your head thinking “great, another acronym and another formatâ€?. Apparently, VMD is based off today’s DVD red laser format and a company called New Medium Enterprises claims to have increased capacity (5GB per layer) to 20 layers per disk. Apparently, this format is expected to support Hi Def. discs and players will only cost $150.  Capacities are expected to reach 200GB, but the use of a blue laser is required. [...]

The initial BD-R discs will provide 25GB of storage capacity and run at x2 speeds (72 MBps). Dual layer discs will be released later this year.
