A Gun That Knows Who You Are

Remember that next time you shake someone’s hand, you’re giving up your identity. Sounds a little far fetched, but in the case of the SmartGun it could stop would be criminals and children from pulling the trigger. With $2 million in funding, scientists have developed a prototype handgun that can identify its users. Identity is based on the user’s grip, something called Dynamic Grip Recognition. The current prototype has a fail rate of 1 in 100. They hope to decrease that fraction to 1 in 10,000 – Pentagon’s standard for military weapons – by increasing the number of sensors from 32 to hundreds, and updating its software. In order for the gun’s safety mechanism to be effective, it must be trained by having the user(s) fire the gun 10 times.
