ReplayTV, the company that helped pioneer Digital Video Recorders alongside TiVo, announced that it will no longer be making standalone DVR boxes, and will instead create DVR software for home theater PCs.
ReplayTV will be partnering up with Hauppauge to offer software that will let you record live television on your PC. All you need to do is pick up a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR tuner-encoder card which will ship with ReplayTV software starting next year.
After ReplayTV sells off its remaining 5500 Series DVR models, it will become completely a software vendor.
With home theater PCs / digital hubs becoming more and more mainstream, I don’t blame ReplayTV for this choice.
