Cingular launches BroadbandConnect 3G network

Cingular announces it has launched its 3G network in the US where it will be known as BroadbandConnect.

Cingular BroadbandConnect delivers 400-700Kbps download speeds using HSDPA technology. HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is the high-speed replacement of GSM/EDGE. BroadbandConnect will be the first use of HSDPA.

You will be able to pick up a laptop PCMCIA card to get high speed internet access. There are currently two manufacturers of these cards. The Sierra Wireless AC860 and the Novatel U730 modem card. Both cards will be $99.99. Plans will start at $19.99 / month.

Cingular will be launching the service in Austin (TX.), Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland (OR.), Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose (CA.), Seattle, Tacoma (Wash.) and Washington D.C.
