Last week I gave you guys my first impressions of the XBox 360. Now I’ve had a week with the system, a chance to play more games, and even try my hand at XBox Live. Today, I’d like to share my second impression with the system.
Last week I was convinced that Microsoft matured as a console developer. They weren’t just throwing PC’s in a box anymore, right? Well it looks like I may have jumped the gun. There’s been reports around the web that the XBox 360 has been crashing like mad. Computers lock up. Consoles do not. So far I’ve only had one lockup. Not terrible, but still not very excusable for a console.
The second thing that convinced me? The heat. Unless the XBox 360 doubles as a pizza oven and no one told me, this thing runs waaay too hot. I mean one of the reasons Apple switched to Intel chips was that the PowerPC processors were running too hot at high speeds. Microsoft? They shove 3 of them in a small box. I guess it’s no surprise that this is the hottest component in my stereo.
Is my second impression that I hate the system? Not at all. I’m still loving it and would recommend to anyone who can’t wait for a PlayStation3 or Revolution. XBox Live is a lot of fun. My favorite feature is that in Perfect Dark, I can play alongside other people on my console against the world. As in 4 people playing on my television against 11 people throughout the world.
I’m still in love with high definition. I’m still in love with the wireless controllers. I just wish Microsoft spent a few more months in engineering to work on some of these heat and locking up issues. And yeah, I’m pretty sure the two have something to do with each other.
I’m definitely not sold this is going to be the best of the new consoles. We definitely still have to see what the upcoming consoles are going to play like. The Nintendo Revolution is still a mystery with its new controller. The PlayStation3 is supposedly even more powerful than the XBox 360. I think those with patience looking for one console should still hold out to see how this battle unfolds. Me? I’ll just buy all 3.
And if you guys give me a little more time with the console, I promise I’ll deliver a full review.
