Soon VW will begin to fit some of their models with a USB plug such that you can use not just your iPod, but any MP3 player. VW will offer two options: one for the iPod, and the other for a standard USB MP3 player. The device, located in the arm rest, will allow for control of the MP3 player via the radio, but who knows if the ID3 tags will be displayed – if not then forget it, I would rather invest in an Alpine deck that has this). The option will cost $240.
If I was Apple I wouldn’t be too happy about this, and furthermore I am surprised they didn’t build in an exclusivity clause with them.
Apple recently announced not only the Nano, but their integration into numerous lines of vehicles, one them being VW.
I still think that Apple and VW should sell the iPod as an option when buying your car. I know when I bought my GTI I would have easily tacked on a 40GB iPod to the financing. After all, what’s another few hundred bucks when you are spending tens of thousands?
